Origin

Ancient Emperors adopted the custom of praying to the Sun in Summer and the Moon in Autumn as far back as 500BC.  Over time, this custom was adopted by royalties, scholars and commoners.  By the Tang dynasty (A.D 18 – 907) this tradition became officially a festival;  its  popularity continued during the Song dynasty (A 960 – 1279), Ming dynasty (A.D. 1368 – 1644) and is still being celebrated each year in many countries in East Asia (China including Hong Kong and Taiwan, Korea, Japan, Vietnam, South East Asia ) and by Chinese communities around the world.
